Concert

What a fantastic concert tonight.  You have some talented musicians!!!  My children loved seeing them all preform!

This week for Reading and Writing Workshop we will assemble our Feature Articles, complete our Poetry Centers, continue our Fiction stories, and blog about our second buddy books.  We sure are busy but loving it all.

Science review is continuing as well.  Today we focused on electricity and we will take different topics each day to refresh their memory of scientific topics covered K-4.

We will be completing a web project on the Revolution this week (I found it at a conference I went to last week and I just can't resist).  In addition, we will start government.

Wednesday we will be performing at a Kindness Assembly for the school with a cute video clip on perseverance. Ask your child about it!

Thank you to parent who have volunteered for Survivor.  I will be sending materials home soon.

If you didn't see the Summer Enrichment Brochure... I encourage you to take look!!!

Budget Vote!

What a great week we have in store for us!

Feature Articles and drafted and revised and currently at home for typing.  Don't forget to do the columns (directions on the sheet) and send in pictures to go along as well.  They do not need to be embedded into the text, separate is fine!

We began our unit on Poetry last week and we will continue it this week during reading and writing workshop.  We have 18 Centers designed for us to read and write poetry at our own pace.  I am excited to see what is going to be produced from this unit.

Hands on Equations was a huge hit and I am so proud of my mathematicians work in algebra.  I heard quite a few comments about how fun and easy it was.  This week we are going to have a deeper look at area and perimeter.

Ecosystems is going to be a great unit of study this week!  We will be looking at 4 different ecosystems, how living and non-living things interact together, food chains, food webs, and the water cycle. Our review of science has begun as well.  We have the NYS science test at the end of the month.  This is a quick review of quite a few subjects covered in science from K-3.

The budget vote is tomorrow!  Today we learned about voting and budgeting.  It was quite exciting and I loved hearing their ideas about what is a need and what is a want!!  It was a great conversation.  Kids Vote Too is tomorrow from 3-9 at the High School Gym... we hope you can make it!

Again, I am so proud of your students and their hard work.  They are really amazing kids!

Hands on Equations, Feature Articles, Fiction, and More

Math testing was a success.  Day three was a bit tricky but everyone did their best!

This week we are working on solving algebraic equations in math.  We do this "hands on" and it is a lot of fun.  You will be amazed that your mathematician can already solve for x with larger equations such as 4x=3x+5.

Feature Articles are progressing nicely.  Monday we wrote strong introductions to make the reader want to read more.  We all shared and have great feedback from our peers.  This week we will be drafting and revising our pieces.

Reading Workshop is focusing on the remaining features of fiction including Movement Through Time, Change, and Plot.  We are using short texts and then transferring our skills to our buddy book.

We have a Constitution in Social Studies... America is finally a free nation!  This week our homework will focus on Social Studies and the Revolution.

We have a special assembly on Tuesday, the Art Show on Thursday, and Tag Sale on Friday so there is LOTS going on!!!  Have a great week!

Late Update - My Appologies

Thank you for your visit on Friday.  My writers were very excited to share their work with you and loved your comments!

We are DONE WITH ELA testing!!! Phew... now for Math.

This week we will be working hard on Fiction story elements.  We will be working through characters, plot and movement through time. We also started our second buddy books today.  We used the kid blog that we created where we wrote reviews of our last buddy books to help pick our new ones.

Writing Workshop will focus on our Feature Articles.  It is research and drafting time.  This may take some extra work at home to get the information they need.

Math Testing begins on Wednesday.  We will be reviewing on Monday and Tuesday to prepare with areas we struggled with on our practice testing.  In addition, we have Scotia Glenville Measuring today - perfect timing with our math test this week.  It is a hands on measurement practice that is fun and educational at the same time!

Social Studies this week will complete the wars with the Revolution and take a look at Benedict Arnold - the traitor.  We will also complete our 13 Colonies map study... it was surprising to discover that Maine used to be part of Massachusetts!

I look forward to finishing up the bulk of our testing this week.  Don't forget that we do have science testing in May and June.  Science is a two day test - one day written and one days hands on!

Have a great week!

Post Vacation Fun

We will be having a lot of post April Vacation fun in fourth grade.

The week we get back is ELA testing.  Book 1 : Multiple Choice is on Tuesday, Book 2: Listening and Writing is on Wednesday, and Book 3: Reading and Writing is on Thursday.  Other than the ELA testing, we will be reading independently and just having a brief review of the sections before each testing day.

In Writing Workshop we will begin to plan out our Feature Articles.  We already have a topic but need to determine our angle and then do some research.  More information will come home if the research is not completed by your student in class.

Math will focus on review.  We have covered all NYS material for the 4th grade year... except Hands on Equations which is a TON of fun.  Long division, time, fractions, and double digit multiplication will be our biggest focus. Homework will be a mixed review of topics.

Social Studies will continue to focus on the Revolution in NY and we will be completing a mapping project of the 13 Original Colonies.

Don't forget those Nature's Classroom deposits and Scotia Glenville Museum $5 if you haven't already sent them in.

Have a great week with your students.
:)
